Is it time to talk?…
Helping Couples
Relationship/Marriage counselling is a safe way for couples to explore and to find methods to deal with conflict and argument in their relationship
As a relationship counsellor I support couples in identifying and applying themselves to any problems or difficulties they may be experiencing within their relationship.
I demonstrate and teach positive interactive and communication techniques providing a safer environment where couples can listen and interact with each other in order to obtain a greater understanding of their own and each others needs and concerns
I provide an unbiased environment whereby both parties get an opportunity to speak and be heard.
What happens during therapy?
A relationship counsellor will generally gather some background information. History may be obtained by way of general discourse or at times by a questionnaire. Both methods help the therapist learn more about an individuals ethnic and cultural background, their beliefs and values.
A common rule in relationship counselling is that there will be time during each session for each partner to talk without interruption from the other partner.
Some couples will seek a one on one session with their counsellor before they begin together.
With the assistance of the counsellor there is ongoing opportunity for couples to practice their listening and communication skills as part of the mediation process in a safe and calm environment.
Examples of issues that couple present to counsellors include, lack of connection, differences of opinion, control issues, conflict and arguments, infidelity, trust issues, financial problems, inequality, sexual issues, addiction, stress, approaches to child rearing, blended families, fear of intimacy – to name just a few.
Creating a lasting relationship
Human relationships are one of the most wonderful yet difficult things we attempt to negotiate in our lives. They are fraught with emotions, passions, conflicts, desires, needs and wants. We all come at them differently, influenced and impacted on by our our family of origin, life experiences, our often poor and basic communication skills and fears of intimacy. In effect we are often unable to achieve truly deep and intimate relationships with ourselves or with others.
Relationship counselling is centred around learning better relationship skills, learning how to value oneself and being able to share a rich emotional connection with another person.
